Antioxidant profile

Antioxidants are substances that inhibit oxidation (chemical reaction) and the production of often harmful chemical compounds/molecules called “free radicals”. Polyphenols are an important class of antioxidants found in plants

Antioxidants protect Cells (e.g., heart and blood vessels) from damage from these free radicals produced when the body breaks down food, or are found in pollutants such as tobacco smoke and radiation

Vitamins C, E and A are antioxidants

Food and beverages with high levels of antioxidants including polyphenols include:

  • Raisins and nuts
  • Broccoli and kale
  • Grapes and berries
  • Grapefruit and orange juice
  • Green Tea
  • Red wine

Measuring antioxidant levels

Antioxidants are measured by their ORAC – oxygen radical absorbance capacity – score which is expressed in units of activity (ability to neutralize oxidation and generation of “free radicals”)

People who live long and healthy lives have been found to consume food and beverages contributing to a diet with high overall ORAC values

What is optimal ORAC score/day ? No ”official” recommended daily allowance (RDA), but United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) recommends people eat enough antioxidant containing foods to achieve a ORAC score of approximately 5000 units/day

Antioxidants in Danesh and 8 Vines Drinks

Danesh and 8 Vines non-alcoholic drinks have significant ORAC values such that they can be part of an overall healthy diet. Several naturally occurring antioxidants have been added to our drinks to enhance their overall antioxidant/ORAC profile:

  • Resveratrol – is an antioxidant found naturally in grape skins, it has especially high levels in red wine
  • Green Tea – contains approximately 30% polyphenols including the antioxidant catechin
  • Green Rooibos – an extract containing the antioxidant aspalathin

Resveratrol, Catechin and Aspalathin

  • All naturally occurring antioxidants
  • Demonstrated beneficial effects on the metabolic (glucose metabolism), cardiovascular (heart and blood vessels) and neurological (brain) systems in the body of animals
  • Amount needed for benefit and to be part of a healthy diet is consistent with the ORAC scores of our non-alcoholic drinks
